This project started as a cold outreach concept rather than a client brief. When I come across a brand I find interesting and think I can help, I'll design a concept mock-up. It gives the owners a way to see what I could bring to the table. Phantom Brewing is known for its folklore-inspired, magic-themed drinks. The brewery is located in Higganum, Connecticut. A town that has its own local legend, a lake monster called the Mucket. When I came across the story, I thought it could make for a fun, on-brand collaboration.

Phantom Brewing's can designs range from minimal to highly detailed. I leaned into their more illustrative side with a comic book-inspired style. After researching the swamp monster's imagery, I created my own version of the Mucket, keeping his signature features intact. A hand-drawn outline and speckled shading gave him that comic book texture. To make it feel like he was emerging from the water, I added rippling waves and lily pads. A full moon rounded it out, turning the scene into night. Keeping the background white lets the bold black linework and shading really pop.

THE MUCKET FOLKLORE:

Deep within Higganum's Candlewood Hill Brook lurks the Mucket, Haddam's own answer to the Loch Ness Monster. First whispered about in the 1950s, the legend grew in the 1980s when local author Arthur Wiknik Jr. chronicled the creature's exploits, describing an eighteen-inch fish with a lizard-like head, curling horns, and razor-sharp teeth. Equal parts trickster and hero, he's known for tipping over trash cans and rescuing swimmers, and Haddam recently honored him with a statue in Higganum Village.
